Romney's PAC brings in $1.6 million in 2009
Mitt Romney's political action committee reported today that it raised $1.6 million in the first six months this year, and it handed out $74,274 to state and federal candidates, leaving it with more than $840,000 in the till.
Romney's Free and Strong America PAC, which helps Republican candidates, is the former Massachusetts governor's vehicle to collect chits as he contemplates a possible second presidential bid in 2012.
Among the beneficiaries: $5,000 each from the PAC went to Senator Jim DeMint of South Carolina, Representative Eric Cantor of Virginia, Representative Roy Blunt who is running for US Senate in Missouri, and Jim Tedisco, who lost a close race in a special election in an upstate New York congressional district. It also contributed $1,000 each to the “Undaunted Dozen,” a group of House Republicans targeted by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee for their votes against the $787 billion economic stimulus bill.
Romney's PAC contributed the maximum $6,800 to Republican Chris Christie’s New Jersey gubernatorial campaign. Today, President Obama is headed to New Jersey to raise money for Democratic Governor Jon Corzine.
And even though it's very early, Romney leads the Republican field for 2012 in a new Gallup Poll out today.
Among Republicans and GOP-leaning independents surveyed July 10-12, Romney gets the support of 26 percent, compared to 21 percent for Sarah Palin, the Republican vice presidential nominee last year who is resigning as Alaska governor at month's end. Palin's PAC brought in about $733,000 during the first six months of 2009.
Mike Huckabee, who like Romney lost to Senator John McCain for the nomination last year, comes in third at 19 percent, followed by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich at 14 percent.
But thanks to high name recognition, Palin leads in favorable ratings with 72 percent, compared to 59 percent for Huckabee and 56 percent for Romney.
"Though it is little over a year since the 2008 GOP primaries, Americans' opinions of Romney and Huckabee have changed significantly. Notably, each seems to have lost a significant share of the public familiarity he built up during the campaign. There has been a double-digit increase in the percentage of Americans who do not express either a positive or a negative opinion of both Romney and Huckabee," Gallup says.

There's a sucker born every minute.
What did the investors in Romney's last campaign get?
Nobody wants a Mormon president
He also leads the GOP in Brylcreme use (and that's not an easy thing to do).
A mormon president is better than the moron president we currently have
being a mormon should have nothing to do with anything. Mitt's a smart guy who knows how to run this country like a CEO, just like clinton did and like it should be. If we put romney in the driver seat, he will fix the economic problems (and stupidity) in this country. guaranteed
Never underestimate the stupidity of the majority. This guy could easily be our next president.
Why does it matter if he is Mormon? Obama is Christian. Neither will/should impose their religious beliefs on Americans. Romney being Mormon is irrelevant, so what is your point?
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on... shame on...
J.P is right. Due to the stupidity of the majority, we have Barry Obama to deal with for the next three plus years.
Romney will clean up in 2012, if it is not already too late
I wouldn't vote for Romney for president if he were running unopposed. The guy has never created a job in his life. All he has done is buy companies and strip them apart and sell them off. Right wingers here would love to pin this disasterous economy on Obama, but I have a memory that goes back a ways and I remember that it took 3 years for Reagan to get a handle on a bad economy. I remember full weel that unemployment ticked up to 11% in 1983, before things started to get better. I'm not foolish enough to opt for more supply side economics when too much of it has ruined our economy. Republicans want to disavow the Bush economy but they can't run away from their disasterous record.
But he'll certainly come out against PAC's when he runs - that's his (flip-flop) style, isn't it.
I though liberals are above the skin color or religion when it comes to politics? Or it does not apply to the conservative candidates.
I'm all for Romney. I’m not a religious man and I don't care if he's Mormon, Evangelist, Judaist or any other flavor of Judeo/Christian direction. What's most important he's level headed EXPERIENCED manager, successful businessmen and most of all patriot of this country.
Enough of community organizers and ultra left liberals.
If Romney wins in 2012, will he hire illegal immigrants to landscape the White House, and say "aw jeez" and walk away when a reporter calls him out on it during a press conference?
Mitt's chances get better and better every day. I hope there is something left to work with in 42 months when he takes office.
Romney's a fraud and a charlatan. He has no core beliefs other than meglamania. He's about as slippery as a greased pig and as truthful as Dick Cheney. The man's better suited to trying to sell me a used car with sawdust in its engine. But there's enough of a whacko constituency within the Republican Party that they'll buy this man's lies, distortions and phony promises.
Flip Romney has got the neo-masses fooled. Then again, they believeed everything GWB and company said, and Rush is their Dali Lama, so we shouldn't be surprised.
#6,
I never underestimate the stupidity of the majority.
Just look at who our current president, governor, senators, representatives, etc. are.
#2, you are just as bad as Judge Sotomayor with your discriminatory comments.
Besides the usual BS partisan childish bashing, does anybody have anything of substance to say AGAINST Romney? He seems the most experienced and the most prepared to take on the job of being president. He understands that we need to work with the money that WE HAVE. Anybody can do a good job on an unlimited budget like Obama has (but it's weird how he's not really doing a good job at all!)
All of you that come out with the "flip flop" thing or the "mormon thing" or the "capitalist pig" thing are reaching.
Lets see, 840K (amount left) plus 74K (handed out) equals 914K. They raised 1.6 Million in the first 6 months of this year..... What happened to the other almost 700K (not to mention whatever they had when the year started)???? Someone as financially smart (and efficient?) as Mitt supposedly is spending almost 50 cents on the dollar for fund raising? If a charity posted this kind of efficiency they would be disbanded in a heart beat! Better check Mitt's pockets (he probably used it to pay the illegals to prep his Belmont home for sale)..... However I do have to aggree with those who think he will balance the Fed budget. Of course it will be by passing the buck (or bill in this case) to the states, just like he did in MA where he balanced the State budget square on the shoulders of the towns!
13.is it better to give 30+ million illegalslegal status and have them and their families on the tax payers support. PERMANENTLY???????
I can't believe some of the posts on here waving the pom poms for Mitt. What has the guy EVER accomplished politically? He was an absentee Governor who didn't want the job in the first place. He ripped the people of Massachusetts as soon as he was out of office.
Meanwhile, Obama was handed a crap sandwich by the most recent Moron-In-Chief. You can quibble all you want about his approach - just remember that he's not the one who got us into this mess.
If Romney would run and take a stand to clean out the illegals from our land, he would win in a land slide. Go MIT Go! MITGO!!!!!!!!
THE CHANGE IS COMING!!!!!
Rasmussen Reports
=============
The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Thursday shows that 29% of the nation's voters now Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Thirty-six percent (36%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of –7 (see trends). Thirty-two percent (32%) now say the country is heading in the right direction That’s down eight points from the 2009 peak and the lowest since February.
Overall, 51% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the President's performance. Forty-seven percent (47%) disapprove.
In state polling, Republican Robert F. McDonnell now holds a narrow lead over Democrat R. Creigh Deeds in the race to become the next governor of Virginia. In New York’s Democratic Primaries, challengers lead over incumbent Governor David Paterson and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. In a Republican Primary, Texas Governor Rick Perry has expanded his lead over Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison.
Who cares if he has illegals cutting the grass? What else are they going to do besides take my money for free health care? Let them cut the grass and clip the hedges. Hell, people in prison get to clean up the highways and most of them are legit citizens!!!
Obama is just spend spend spend and hurry up and do it. I can already feel how empty my grand kids pockets are, and I am only 34!
Romney may or may not be the answer, but spending like you stole it is not the answer either.
I don't know why I am compelled to comment on this article, as so many of you are rabidly against the notion of this man being President. But, Romney gained excellent experience in the last cycle and has handled himself extremely well. He is only strengthening and by 2012 should be in excellent shape to take Obama down. In fact, he'd have done it this time around had he been the nominee. If we had known the economy would be so central, he would have beat McCain and Obama both.
A good bumper sticker for this column
"Liberals are very tolerant......as long as you don't have an opposing viewpoint from them"
What if everyone discriminated against a candidate b/c of religion?
No Bloomberg, No Franken, No Kennedy.
Talk to people about the path of the Bush years and nobody says it ended favorably. Talk to Repubies about the line up for 2012 candidates and most say that there needs to be some new blood. Romney, Palin, Huckabee,Gingrich, I had hoped for better. Perhaps there is a temporary dead end in Republican presidential candidates. I have a ray of hope that none of the above are successful...... for the sake of the GOP and the USA. Political carisma is not exclusion unless you're right, intelligent hillbilly perspectives, God's friend of the family and the A-HOLE all in respective order. There has to be new blood.
Justin - The sad thing is that you have to subscribe to some form of stupid delusionalism to get elected to office, or at least pay lip service to them, but Romney's religion is far more insane that the usual superstitionist piles of crap most people support. Atheists have to lie about their beliefs to be elected, in a country that is supposed to have separation of church and state.
David Long--
Do you care to elaborate on what makes Romney''s religion more "insane" than any other?
