Showdown looms on Wilson shout
Representative Joe Wilson -- applauded by supporters and reviled by critics as the congressman who shouted "You lie!" at President Obama -- took to the House floor today, but did not publicly apologize again.
Instead, he briefly talked again about his concerns about Obama's health care plan, setting up a possible showdown Tuesday on a Democratic resolution of disapproval -- a highly public slap at Wilson's behavior.
The House Republican leader, John Boehner of Ohio, made clear today that he would strenuously oppose the resolution.
"Rep. Wilson has apologized to the President, and the president accepted his apology. Last Thursday, Speaker Pelosi said that she believed it was time to move on and discuss health care," Wilson said in a statement. "I couldn’t agree more, and that’s why I plan to vote ‘no’ on this resolution. Instead of pursuing this type of petty partisanship, we should be working together to lower costs and expand access to affordable, high-quality health coverage on behalf of the American people."
Meanwhile, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee said this afternoon that since Wilson's outburst last Wednesday night, his Democratic foe, Rob Miller, has received more than 40,000 individual contributions totaling more than $1.5 million for his rematch next year.
