King penguins are strong swimmers and hunters who use their wings as
flippers. They can dive almost 1,000 feet and swim as fast as six miles per
hour. In low light, such as deep in the ocean, their eye pupils expand to
help them see and catch hundreds of fish. During the summer, the penguins
feed on small fish and squid. In the winter they must forage in deeper
waters. The creatures feed only about every two weeks and in between
feeding trips, can lose up to half their body weight.
