During the surgery, Alex wears a metal halo called a stereotactic frame. Screwed directly into his temples, it provides surgeon Efstathios Papavassiliou with the hard-and-fast reference points he needs to find the exact spots in Alexs brain where the electrodes should go. As he operates, anesthesiologist Kai Matthes holds Alexs hand and keeps an eye on his condition.
