BostonGlobe.com and Boston.com have been honored by an international design organization for the use of data visualization and graphics to illustrate breaking news and investigative reporting by the Boston Globe during 2011.

Judges for the Society for News Design’s digital competition considered more than 500 entries from around the world in categories including including overall design, data projects, breaking news, mobile and tablet design, according to Daniel Zedek, assistant managing editor for editorial design at the Globe.

The judges awarded a Silver Medal to Globe Web developer Tom Giratikanon for his data visualization of restaurants mislabeling the fish they serve, “Results of the Globe’s fish testing.”

Giratikanon also earned a Silver Medal for his 2011 portfolio, which included participating with the Globe Spotlight Team’s investigation of handling of drunk driving cases by some judges. His work was posted to both BostonGlobe.com and Boston.com under the headline of “Trial Excerpts: Getting to ‘not guilty’.”

The other works in Giratikanon’s portfolio were: “Mapping Boston’s worst towing spots,” “What Twitter users asked the president,” “How hard the wind will hit your area, and when,” and “The state of Massachusetts’s sea walls.”

An award of excellence for a data-driven project was awarded to Globe designers Daigo Fujiwara, Luke Knox, and Tom Giratikanon for “The Bobby Valentine era begins.’’

Another award of excellence for a data-driven project went to Fujiwara, Javier Zarracina, and Giratikanon for “Two localities a world apart.”

Monica Ulmanu, Grant Staublin, and the Globe producer and video team won an award of excellence for the special series, “Getting In: Navigating Boston’s school assignment maze.”

The full winners list can be found here at the SND’s website.
