Dr. Phil McGraw sparked outage after tweeting, "If a girl is drunk, is it OK to have sex with her? Reply yes or no to @drphil #teenaccused."

The controversial tweet was taken down immediately, but a petition was created demanding McGraw apologize. The petition claims sex without consent is never okay, and that the TV doc should publicly apologize.

Several critics used hashtag #DrPhilQuestions on Twitter to responded to McGraw's question:

Producers of the show released a statement saying the tweet was meant "to evoke discussion leading into a very serious show topic based upon a recent news story, hence the #teensaccused label. It was a poll question, not a statement or a joke."

Producers added, "This was a research post in preparation for a show, not a personal post and Dr. Phil deleted it the second he saw it. It was clearly ill-advised. We sincerely apologize that it suggested anything other than what was intended, data gathering. As you can imagine, Dr. Phil is very upset that this happened.”

No word yet from the 62-year-old McGraw, who has since tweeted about stepparent abuse and when a child is too young to have "the talk."
