What’s in the news?

- Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis has submitted his letter of resignation to Mayor Thomas Menino and will hold a news conference Monday to discuss his future plans.

- Catholics around the globe are reacting mostly positively to Pope Francis' recent remarks that the church has become too focused on "small-minded rules" on hot-button issues like homosexuality, abortion and contraceptives. At Masses over the weekend, the faithful reflected on how they believe Francis' comments will impact the Catholic Church. The pope said Thursday that pastors should focus less on divisive social issues and should emphasize compassion over condemnation.

- The husband of one of two women killed in New Hampshire when a car slammed into a group of bicyclists during an annual ride along the New England coastline says police are conducting a criminal investigation into the accident. Investigators say a car driven by a 20-year-old woman crossed the center line and struck a group of riders crossing a bridge in Hampton on Saturday morning. Tom Rogers, of South Hamilton, Mass., lost his wife, Pamela Wells, in the crash. He says police told him they confiscated the driver's phone, took her car and administered blood tests.

- U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren is planning to hold a pair of round-table discussions about the fiscal challenges facing military families in Massachusetts and across the country.

- State police are trying to determine what caused a car to go off Interstate 495 and crash into trees in Mansfield in an accident that killed one person and injured two others.

- A 41-year-old North Adams man is facing arraignment on a murder charge in the death of an elderly woman found slain in her home. Berkshire District Attorney David Capeless said David Delratez is to appear Monday in district court in North Adams on murder and car theft charges in the death of 84-year-old Ellen DePaoli.

- Parishioners at a closed New Bedford Catholic church are protesting a decree by the local bishop that clears the way for a different use of the building. Bishop George Coleman's decree on St. John the Baptist Church means the building can be used for a secular purpose, as long as the purpose is not offensive to Catholics.

Events for today:

- One way to show your gratitude for our veterans is by attending Mission Gratitude at Symphony Hall. The performance raises funds for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans and families suffering from "invisible wounds" of war like post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury. The stellar line-up of musicians and comics includes The Band Perry, Big & Rich, Sarah Silverman, Darrell Hammond, Cassadee Pope, The Henningsens, Angie Johnson, and Rita Wilson.

- All Star Mondays at Machine brings in a big star this week. Actor/comedian and Crystal Head Vodka owner Dan Aykroyd stops by for the night of drag shows and dancing. DJ Jay Ine provides the tunes.

- It's Salty Pig chefs Kevin O'Donnell and Michael Lombardi Jr. versus Karen Akunowicz of Myers + Chang in Porkapalooza at The Salty Pig. Each team gets the same mystery pig part, then goes to work highlighting it in an impromptu dish. Guests eat both and vote to determine who's Head Hog.
