What’s in the news?

- A pretrial hearing is set for today for Aisling Brady McCarthy, the Irish nanny charged in the death of a Cambridge toddler. McCarthy's lawyer accuses prosecutors of giving a grand jury "false and deceptive" information to get a murder indictment in the death of Rehma Sabir.

- Katherine Clark took the Democratic primary and Frank Addivinola won the Republican in yesterday's 5th Congressional District race to fill the seat vacated by now-Senator Ed Markey. The two will now face each other in a special election in early December.

- Today is the deadline for Massachusetts residents to vote in next month's local elections. More than 50 communities are holding votes on local leaders and issues, with Boston voters picking a successor to retiring Mayor Thomas Menino.

- With the federal shutdown continuing, the Army Corps of Engineers says it's temporarily closing its New England regulatory office because it doesn't have the money to keep it open. Someone will be available to make emergency decisions.

- Shayanna Jenkins, the girlfriend of former Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez, has pleaded not guilty to a perjury charge in Hernandez's murder case. Authorities say Jenkins lied to a grand jury -- including about where she dumped a box Hernandez had asked her to "get rid of."

- Croation cellists Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser, otherwise known as 2Cellos, play at Citi Performing Arts Center: Shubert Theatre tonight. 8 p.m.

- Singer-songwriter Janelle Monae will play songs from her new album, "The Electric Lady" tonight at the House of Blues. 7 p.m.
