NBC’s morning info-tainment extravaganza, otherwise known as the TODAY show, has reported on its allDAY blog that one of its more recognizable faces not belonging to an on-air personality has passed away.

Linny Boyette, known to tried and true TODAY show fans as the bespectacled African-American man who was a constant presence among the show’s Rockefeller Center outdoor audience, reportedly was in his early 70s and died early Sunday after an undisclosed illness.

Each morning, including many weekends, the camera reliably landed on Boyette’s face, revealing his familiar smirk, and many in attendance seemingly clamored to stand by Boyette because they knew it would guarantee being seen nationally on live television.

The TODAY show recently did a short piece on him to announce that he was gravely ill:

Fans of the show have been tweeting photos of themselves with the Boyette, further testament to the man's popularity.

The TODAY show also tweeted about the sad news:

Linny will be missed.
