Federal judge Denise Casper sentenced notorious Boston gangster James 'Whitey' Bulger today to two life sentences plus five years, bringing to a close the saga of the FBI's 16-year manhunt, his capture, and his racketeering trial. Bulger, 84, was convicted in August of participating in 11 murders, drug trafficking, racketeering, money laundering, extortion, and other crimes.

Bulger was also ordered to pay $19.5 million in restitution to his victims’ families and to forfeit $25.2 million to the government.
