Social media captures images of heavy blaze at Back Bay apartment building

Boston Fire Department tweeted its response this afternoon to a five-alarm fire in the rear of a six-story Back Bay apartment building at 31 Massachusetts Avenue. The building reportedly had 30 units.

One person who claimed to live in the affected building took to Twitter to post this photo.

Another posted this video on Instagram.

The fire department also provided a picture from the front of ladders extending to the top of the building.

The fire department estimates that 35 residents have been displaced as a result of the fire.

Another view provides a better look at the firefighters' ascent up the ladder.

One Instagram user posted a couple of photos from the scene, as well.

Water splashed against the building's facade as firefighters attempted to extinguish the heavy blaze.

The fire department said the fire was on the building's fifth and sixth floors.

The Boston Fire Department's chief estimates the damage will cost $2,500,000.
