Jarrod Saltalamacchia, the former Red Sox catcher who now plays for the Miami Marlins, returned to his home after a workout yesterday to find that a small plane had crashed not far from his Wellington, Florida home.

According to a report from the Sun Sentinel, the crash occurred in the early afternoon yesterday, and the pilot did not survive.

“He was still laying there and they were covering him up best they could,” Saltalamacchia told Sun Sentinel reporter Juan C. Rodriguez. “Firefighters were there. It was crazy.”

The pilot was reportedly an experienced pilot and a member of the Aero Club, an aviation community that has its own runway near Saltalamacchia's home.
