Former Boston Bruins center Rich Peverley, now with the Dallas Stars, collapsed on the bench in the middle of a game Monday night.

Peverly was rushed from the bench and stabalized, the Associated Press reported.

Dr. Gil Salazar of UT Southwestern Hospitals said Peverley was treated ‘‘successfully’’ for a cardiac event at American Airlines Center.

‘‘We provided oxygen for him,’’ Salazar said. ‘‘We started an IV. We did chest compressions on him and defibrillated him, provided some electricity to bring a rhythm back to his heart, and that was successful with one attempt, which is very reassuring.

‘‘As soon as we treated him, he regained consciousness. He was able to tell me where he was.’’

The game was eventually called off.

Tweets from the Dallas Stars' account updated Peverley's condition, noting that doctors described the incident as a "cardiac event."

Back in September, Peverley was treated for an irregular heartbeat. He received surgery that forced him to miss three weeks of the season.

Peverley played for the Bruins for two years, including the 2011 season when Boston won the Stanley Cup. He was traded to the Dallas Stars last July along with forward Tyler Seguin and defenseman Ryan Button. The Bruins received left wing Loui Eriksson, forwards Reilly Smith and Matt Fraser, as well as a defensive prospect.

In addition to Seguin, two other former Bruins were in the Columbus-Dallas game. Tim Thomas is now a goalie for the Stars, and Nathan Horton is a right wing for the Blue Jackets.
