Former major league baseball superstar Ken Griffey Jr. was known for his enthusiasm for the game on the field and his charismatic personality off the field. But both of those qualities were not quite apparent with his interview Wednesday on ESPN's SportsCenter.

Griffey looked lethargic and disinterested when bubbly anchor Linda Cohn tried to spark some vigor in the interview. Cohn held it together well considering her press for a conversation resulted in one-word answers.

While the interview made many viewers cringe, Cohn didn't seem to break a sweat.

The sponsored interview was given by Griffey on behalf of the sports card company Upper Deck which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

Shortly after news of the awkward interview made its rounds online, Griffey offered an apology to Cohn by phone and through his Instagram account and blamed his behavior on being under the weather.

"I want to apologize to Linda for the way things went today," he wrote. "I was in the middle of a cough attack and felt a little ill and didn't want to walk off the set."

And class act Cohn accepted.
