In the general election, the incumbent, Timothy P. Murray, a former Worcester mayor who often works behind the scenes in Gov. Deval Patrick's administration, is running against a Republican candidate, Senate Minority Leader Richard R. Tisei of Wakefield, and Green-Rainbow candidate Rick Purcell of Holyoke, an Army veteran and community activist. Independent Paul JP Loscocco dropped out. The term is four years.
