PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Islanders are being urged to stay off the roads as a potentially dangerous winter storm threatens to bring heavy winds and up to two feet of snow to the area.

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation advised residents to avoid any unnecessary travel Friday. Officials say roads could become treacherous as winds and drifting snow reduces visibility.

Officials in Providence urged businesses to let their workers work from home or leave the office by noon Friday to avoid the worst of the storm.

Nearly all school districts in the state cancelled classes on Friday.end of story marker
