LACONIA, N.H. (AP) — Organizers have canceled this weekend’s World Championship Sled Dog Derby in Laconia, N.H., saying rain and sleet coated the trails with thick ice.

Lakes Region Sled Dog Club President Jim Lyman says it’s in the best safety interest for the dogs and mushers not to run.

Organizers said a snowstorm expected Saturday night might also make conditions difficult. Too much snow could create uneven trails.

Lyman said there’s talk about holding the event next weekend.

The club will meet Monday night to make a final decision on whether to proceed.

This is the second time this year the derby has been postponed due to unfavorable weather. It was originally scheduled for Feb. 8-10.
