MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — The state of Vermont is warning people about the danger posed by snow on roofs across the state.
Rain and mixed precipitation is forecast for parts of Vermont on Thursday night and Friday. The rain would add weight to snow already on the roofs of houses and barns, potentially causing some roofs to collapse.
The state says that strange noises, cracking, or visible movement of rafters could be signs that a collapse is imminent, although roofs could collapse without those symptoms.
Farm and home owners are urged to monitor roofs and clear off snow if necessary and if it can be done safely.
If there is a concern for the safety of people clearing roofs, a professional contractor should be called in to inspect and, if needed, clear the roof.
