Flood watch in place for Southern New England

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for Northern Connecticut, Southwest New Hampshire, all of Rhode Island and Massachusetts from the east slopes of the Berkshires to the south coast.

The watch period extends from Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday night.

The NWS at Taunton issued the watch at 4 p.m. stating that occasional heavy rain may produce flooding on smaller rivers and streams Tuesday night into Wednesday.

Total rainfall of between 1.5 and 3 inches is expected over much of the region with some areas getting up to 4 inches.

The NWS said minor flooding would begin once the rainfall reaches three inches.

Earlier this month, up to nine inches of rain fell in parts of southern New England causing widespread flooding.

The latest NWS flood watch advisory pointed out that Cape Cod and the Islands would not be affected by the heavy rains.

However, a wind advisory was issued for the Cape and the Islands with winds gusting up to 57 miles per hour forecast for after 8 p.m.

The sustained, southerly winds continuing into Wednesday morning are expected to range between 31 and 39 mph with gusts ranging between 46 and 47 mph.
