Cooler air coming, but still sunny
I was having a rare cup of coffee this morning with a friend (I am more a tea guy) and discussing what to blog about this afternoon. He quipped, that there wasn’t much to say about nice weather which is certainly mostly true. However, all this dry weather is going to quickly become an issue as the foliage is rapidly emerging on the trees and water is being used by all the plants at a terrific rate.

FULL ENTRYProlonged period of dry sunny weather
The dry spell is going to continue almost uninterrupted through the weekend and into next week. This is certainly one of the nicest stretches of late April and eventually early May weather possible. Temperatures are going to run in the upper 60s and lower 70s much of the time with a shot of cooler air for Friday and Saturday. At that time highs will stay in the 50s and lower 60s.

FULL ENTRYPicture perfect weather this week
Every once in a while the weather becomes so perfect it’s almost hard to believe this is New England. The next week is going to be one of those periods where you might quip, “Why can’t it always be like this?" Cool mornings and mild afternoons with plenty of sunshine are going to repeat itself over and over into Friday. There won’t be much difference in how high or low temperatures get each day.

Nearly perfect April weekend on the way
The weather forecast for the next 5 to 7 days looks so wonderful it makes me nervous. You might think what would make you nervous about sunshine and dry weather? There are two things. First, this time of year a full week of no rain isn't good for agriculture. We are going to finish April with a rain deficit and this will be the second month, since the start of the year, without adequate moisture. While the landscape is greening, it won’t take long for drought to rear its ugly head. I probably get overly concerned about the rain, but as a gardener that’s where my head goes.

FULL ENTRYFeeling like November today, but much better tomorrow
I think I heard a collective groan this morning when folks realized the day was going to feel more like early March than a week before May. The good news is the cold chilly weather isn’t going to last that long and by tomorrow afternoon most of you will get to enjoy sunshine and temperatures 20 degrees warmer than today. We have all seen springs where these raw days last for a week or more so having one of these kind of days isn’t so bad.

Chilly start to the week, milder finish
Temperatures are winter cold this morning with most places under the 30F mark and several towns in the 20s. Temperatures this cold in late April while not typical are not record breaking. It is unusual enough for a frost warning to be put into effect for much of Cape Cod and the islands. It was a bright and clear day yesterday, but spring has been very slow to arrive this year. Sunday was one of only a handful of sunny days since early March.

FULL ENTRYShowers end the week, nice weekend ahead
I get up this morning to do my blog and something akin to a Hollywood movie is going on just west of Boston. Unfortunately, this is real. What a bizarre and twisted night and morning. I just hope this gets resolved and people stay safe.

FULL ENTRYSunshine fades as clouds and wind increase
The juxtaposition of a beautiful day and what happened in Boston yesterday is always so strange to me. Last evening I was sitting outside watching the birds have a last feeding before they went to sleep. I kept thinking how fortunate I am to live in such a great part of the world during a fantastic time of year and yet keenly aware many families were living in utter dismay as their own lives had been turned upside down in an instant. I often say that I can tell you how everyone’s story ultimately ends, but the manner and timing of that ending are what we don’t know.
A great day for the marathon kicks off a super week of weather
It's quite chilly this morning across the region with a few spots in the 20s and most others in the 30s. The sun is very strong this time of year, similar to mid-August, so temperatures will rise rapidly through the morning. High pressure continues to build into region and this will be the first full week that you will really feel spring has arrived. A coastal sea-breeze will prevent Boston from hitting 60F today, but most areas away from the coast will be at or above that mark the entire week!

FULL ENTRYRain and sleet tapering to showers this evening
What a miserable afternoon. Cold, wind, rain and sleet. The weather doesn't get much more unfavorable. I don't think anyone liked today's return to winter. The good news is that the storm is going to pull away this evening and leave us with a few showers and a general trend towards better conditions.
The heaviest of the rain should be over for the evening commute. Temperatures will remain in the 30s to lower 40s and winds will add to the chilly conditions.

FULL ENTRYWarm afternoon, but chilly rain ends week
Spring is a time of transition and when the weather transitions from winter to summer crazy things can happen. I just check the weather in Denver and it's 20F with snow.
Further east, Washington, DC will be in the 80s the next couple of days and some areas will make a run at 90!

Sun shines on Red Sox Nation
There isn’t much question what to write about today. It's opening day at Fenway Park and even if you aren’t a big baseball fan, the energy that comes to Kenmore square can be infectious. For today the weather looks warm and dry with abundant sunshine mixing with clouds. Temperatures will hit the middle to upper 60s today. Winds will be much lighter than yesterday afternoon, coming from the west. Those light winds will let a sea breeze kick in during the first half of the game, so it will cool off into the upper 50s by 5PM.
The sea breeze comes from the east/northeast (30 degrees on the picture) and goes against balls heading for the outfield.
This is why when the wind comes form that direction, singles are the predominant hit as opposed to a southwest wind that gives the balls a bit of lift and helps them get out of the park.
It's a good thing the game is today because starting tomorrow sunshine will be limited and showers and even steady rain are in the forecast until we hit the weekend.

Feeling more like spring today
This afternoon is going to feel more like what you would expect for early April with temperatures getting back into the 50s and that gusty wind no longer a factor. Although there will still be a breeze, today’s breeze is going to be coming from a southwest direction and since the air to our southwest is milder so too will be temperatures. Abundant sunshine will make this a pleasant day all around. The map below gives a good idea of temperatures around 2PM today.

Blustery again, but milder air to come
Another blustery and cold day is on tap, but it won’t be as chilly as yesterday. Earlier I could hear the wind still blowing the bird feeders around and the thermometer by my bedside read an even 30F. The winds actually kept temperatures from getting even colder last night which was a good thing. Wind tends to mix up the air and not let the cold air settle to the ground. Some trees such as my cornus mas are already in bloom. Although these plants normally bloom this early, a night of temperatures in the lower 20s would hurt the blossoms.

Mild Monday followed by a brief return to winter-like chill
Last evening I heard the spring peepers for the first time this season. Peepers are small frogs that will mate in the next few weeks. The chorus of peeping is a sure sign of spring and only lasts a short time. Peepers start when overnight temperatures in late March and early April remain above 40F. After a mild night last evening with a scattering of showers we will have a nice and mild Monday with highs easily nearing 60F. Another cold front will close the area later this afternoon with a few scattered showers. If you get a shower it will not last long and we won’t see much in the way of rain.

A lamb-like Easter weekend
The end of March is fast approaching and when it’s over, this month will go down in the record books as a cold and snowy one. The good news is the lamb will indeed lead us into April this year. You probably noticed a lot of clouds around the area the past couple of days and today will continue that trend. A weak bit of energy will rotate through the area during the day and this will produce periods of clouds with just the risk of a shower. Any rain that falls will be light and not last long.

Sunshine today, but snow is in the forecast, sorta
Yesterday I had a several people ask about the snowstorm for tomorrow. While there is the word "snow" in the forecast, there isn't a snowstorm on the way. One of the problems with the internet, and there are many, is that forecasts get boiled down to images. When you look at the forecast via your cell phone or even favorite web page they often use the most outlying part of the forecast for the icon. You have to look at the details of the forecast, the chance of precipitation and the actual words that go along with the prediction. I'll be updating my weather forecast with any changes on Twitter at @growingwisdom please follow me there. Feel free to comment or ask questions too.
FULL ENTRYSnow to our south will miss New England
You might have noticed your car was quite warm inside if you parked in the sun this weekend. The sun drives the weather and the sun is getting stronger this time of the year, really fast. Since the beginning on the month the sun has risen about 10 degrees higher at noon. To put that in context, the sun is now a full 25 degrees higher around lunch than it was back in December. If you don’t remember your geometry, a sun directly overhead at noon would be at 90 degrees, today the sun will reach 50 degrees above the horizon. (Due to daylight saving time it’s actually 1 PM). Besides the fact this is why it is getting warmer, it’s also why any snow that falls during the day this time of year is almost impossible to stick.I'll be updating my weather forecast with any changes to the coastal storm on Twitter at @growingwisdom please follow me there. Feel free to comment or ask questions too.
FULL ENTRYBands of moderate to heavy snow south of Boston
Depending on exactly where you are this evening dictates just how much snow you are seeing. Some areas on the south shore are getting heavy snow, while other areas just a few miles away have lighter now. Most of the snow will be over by 2 AM, but there can be snow showers until sunrise.
The final totals will be heaviest 30 miles or so side of Plymouth.I'll be updating my weather forecast on Twitter at @growingwisdom please follow me there. Feel free to comment or ask questions too.
Spring arrives, what's next, what's normal?
Welcome to spring. I know the world looks like the middle of January for many of us this morning, but just after 7 AM astronomical spring arrived. A question I got quite a bit yesterday was “are we done with winter?” Other folks asked me why this winter has been so different from last year’s. I think the answer to both of those questions is related, so let me briefly address them.I'll be updating my weather forecast for the rest of this week on Twitter at @growingwisdom please follow me there. FULL ENTRYSnow showers ending, a nice day ahead
Our storm is now moving into Maine after leaving up to a foot of snow across parts of southern New England. You can see the totals below as they were reported today for much of Southern New England. A few leftover snow showers will push through the are until about midnight. Some areas could see a dusting to an inch. As temperatures fall below freezing any slush will freeze and roads can become quite slippery. Tomorrow looks to be a very nice sunny day though it will be blustery. Temperatures will reach the lower 40s in the afternoon. There will be a storm to our east in the ocean Thursday and Friday and this could bring a few snow showers to the coast Thursday night.
Although the ocean storm will be quite large, it does look to stay far enough off the coast to keep us from getting another major storm. Of course we will have to keep watching the models tomorrow to see if things change, but as of now I am not concerned.
The weekend is looking nice and dry with temperatures in the mid-40s. That is still chilly for the end of March, but there will be some melting from the strong March sun. Right now the pattern is not looking to change to a mild one, and I am not convinced we are done with the snow. FULL ENTRYWindy with rain and snow into the evening
Spring arrives tomorrow morning at 7:02 AM. Is that a collective groan I hear or two other colorful words? Our storm has left its mark on the area with up to 9 inches of snow on the ground. Logan Airport has officially seen just over 6 inches of snow. We find the area of snow moving north at the same time warmer air has changed the snow to sleet or rain south of the Massachusetts Turnpike.
As milder air moves north areas further north can see some sleet mix with the snow. Temperatures are not above freezing in Boston so any mix of snow and rain will not accumulate.I'll be updating new details on the storm throughout the day on Twitter at @growingwisdom please follow me there. Feel free to comment or ask questions too.
Snow continues overnight, several inches by dawn
Snow will continue to move north into New Hampshire and Maine the rest of the night. At times snow will come down at 1 to perhaps 2 inches per hour especially in the wee hours of the morning. Several inches of snow will be on the ground by 5 AM with a few more inches thereafter.
A winter storm warning is now posted for much of New England with the south coast under a winter weather advisory. I'll be updating all the latest information about the storm here and on Twitter at @growingwisdom please follow me there. Feel free to comment or ask questions too.
Winter storm watches for late Monday and Tuesday
It's probably not what most of you want to hear, but winter storm warnings have been posted for potential snow of over 6 inches.
Another snowstorm is headed for the area. The vernal equinox arrives just after sunrise Wednesday morning, but with snow on the ground in many places it will look like the depths of winter. The interesting thing is that total snowfall for the year in Boston while certainly above average isn't all that high standing at about 56 inches or roughly a foot and a half above normal. Worcester on the other hand has had over 100 inches of snow and is nearly 4 feet above their normal snowfall. There is a huge difference in the type of winter this has been depending on where you have spent the past 3 months..I'll be updating my weather forecast for this next storm on Twitter at @growingwisdom please follow me there. Feel free to comment or ask questions too.
Cold March to continue with another storm
The march to warm spring weather can often be frustrating and this year is going to bare out that fact. As I review the charts today, one aspect that screams out to me is the lack of any sign of truly mild air for the rest of March. You might ask how I can possibly predict the next two weeks, when we are still unsure of the details for Tuesday’s storm. I’ll provide more information on that in just a bit. I'll be updating my weather forecast for this weekend and the upcoming storm on Twitter at @growingwisdom please follow me there. Feel free to comment or ask questions too.
