Cooler with more showers on the way

Posted by David Epstein June 27, 2013 08:00 AM

Dry sunny weather isn’t in the cards right until later next week. That’s the headline of the weather as we head towards the weekend and the July 4th holiday.
A front brought ocean air to New England yesterday and brought a significant drop in temperature. Boston fell back to the 70s in the afternoon, while inland areas remained in the 80s. Today, I am expecting highs to stay in the upper 60s and lower 70s, a much cooler day for everyone.

Flood watch has been issued

Posted by David Epstein June 26, 2013 05:00 PM

The bulk of the area has seen warm and humid conditions today with only scattered storms. We still have a risk for thunderstorms through sunset, but even more rain is likely later Thursday and Friday. A flash flood watch has now been issued for the possibility of flooding from heavy rain both tomorrow and Friday. This watch is in effect for nearly all of southern New England. flood watch again.png(areas in green)

No drought with this pattern

Posted by David Epstein June 25, 2013 10:00 AM

What a beautiful morning. It’s warm and the sunshine is abundant. Over the next week to 10 days I think it will be important to take advantage of the morning as the chance for rain will increase in the afternoon.

Heat and humidity for the week

Posted by David Epstein June 24, 2013 01:02 PM

Heat and humidity are on tap for the next few days. Yesterday many areas hit 90F. Since most places will hit 90F, or higher, the next 2 or 3 days this latest round of sultry weather will mark heat wave number two for the season. There hasn't been an official heat wave for Logan Airport yet, but as you know from reading my blog, I don't really think that matters since no one lives there. If you live right along the water, you probably won't have a heat wave either.

Summertime weather through the weekend

Posted by David Epstein June 22, 2013 09:25 AM

Summer officially arrived just after 1 AM Friday along the east coast and this means that the sun has now reached its highest point in the sky for the year. The kids may still be in school, but the days lose a few seconds of daylight from now until just before Christmas.

A vastly improved forecast

Posted by David Epstein June 19, 2013 08:12 AM

No watches, no warnings, no thunder, no rain. Finally, a long stretch of dry weather is on the way. Our wet June pattern is going to quickly transition into a more typical summertime pattern. For at least for the next week any showers that do occur will be more scattered and won't come in torrents of rain. Boston has now had about 9.50" of rain this month, 7 inches over what you would have expected heading into the third week of June. Heavy rains slipping south, improving conditions on the way

Posted by David Epstein June 18, 2013 05:32 PM

Quite the day of rain and storms again. Some areas saw road closures and flooded basements. The line of showers and thunderstorms that caused all those issues is pushing south towards Cape Cod. The rest of the evening will see improvement from north to south. The shower area is also weakening as it moves past Plymouth. The radar loop below shows where the line of rain was as of about 5:30 PM.

Sunshine fading for Dad's day

Posted by David Epstein June 16, 2013 09:36 AM

Happy Father’s Day! Our weather today will be going downhill, but in a slow, not dramatic fashion. A frontal system is going to pass through the area late today and with it comes the chance for showers. Dry conditions overall will continue through the morning with the chance of showers increasing after 4 PM. It’s going to be a warm day and even with fading sunshine.

Wet morning, but drier afternoon and better weekend

Posted by David Epstein June 14, 2013 07:00 AM

Happy Flag Day, mid-June is certainly usually much better than this. Our latest nor'easter is now pushing east and the rain will taper off later this morning. This storm has given the area exactly what any nor'easter would: heavy precipitation, wind and cold temperatures. I am expecting some additional periods of rain during the morning commute. Friday commutes tend to be a bit lighter, but with the rain this one might be slow.

Wet pattern to continue

Posted by David Epstein June 12, 2013 11:14 AM

Be careful what you wish for. That saying is stuck in my head as I think back to the first week of May after 4 weeks of virtually no rain. Since that time we have had 8-10 inches of rain and more is on the way, definitely too much of a good thing. You can see on the radar loop below more rain poised to move into the region tomorrow.

More soaking rain on our doorstep

Posted by David Epstein June 10, 2013 09:40 AM

More rain is on the way. There are flood watches up from Virginia to Maine this morning for all the heavy rain on the way. Areas in green along the east on the map below have the potential for flooding of some sort. I am expecting a general 1 to 2 inch rainstorm beginning later this afternoon and continuing overnight. When you combine this additional rainfall with the heavy rain from Friday we start to run the risk of more urban and street flooding. Also, rivers and streams are running rather high so there can be some flooding of the smaller rivers and streams.

Clearing with some sunshine today

Posted by David Epstein June 8, 2013 09:05 AM

Our storm is now pulling away to the north and east of the area and the rain is all but done. One of the reasons I didn’t want you to cancel outdoor plans from mid-morning onward is that we have a reasonably nice day for Saturday and even a better one for tomorrow. There are still flood watches and warnings up for some small streams and rivers, but I expect those to come down during the morning and early afternoon. The term "flood" is used even if the water goes 1/2 inch above flood stage and doesn't mean there will be any real problems.I'll be updating the forecast throughout the weekend on Twitter at @growingwisdom Please follow me there. Torrential rain for several hours overnight

Posted by David Epstein June 7, 2013 10:00 PM

Torrential rain will continue for several hours overnight. This has prompted flood warnings to be issued for nearly the entire southern New England area. These warnings are mostly for small stream and not big river flooding. Please be sure to check your sump pumps and if you are prone to flooding you may want to elevate any important material off the basement floor. This is going to be a system that causes urban flooding problems more than anything else.flash flooding.gif At times the rain will come down at impressive rates and make travel difficult. Andrea's impact and the weekend forecast

Don’t cancel the weekend plans. That is my advice for the upcoming weekend. We do have rain on the way, but most of the weekend is going to be dry and rain free. Let’s get right to the overview and then I will give you the specifics and try to break down both days as best as possible.

Perfect day of weather won't last

Posted by David Epstein June 5, 2013 01:39 PM

Are you a morning or night person? Any regular reader of my blog knows what the answer is for yours truly. I have been a morning person most of my life. Except for that weird period post puberty when I use to stay up until 2 or 3 AM, I have always enjoyed the morning. This time of the year is my absolute favorite because of the morning light. It occurred to me on my walk at 5AM, if someone was a night person, and went to be at midnight or later they would only have 4 hours of total darkness before the light started coming in again. When I go to bed around 9, it’s still slightly light on the western horizon.

Ideal weather followed by some more rain

Posted by David Epstein June 4, 2013 10:07 AM

June can be hot or June can be cold and June can be almost anything in the middle. The month reminds me of December in a similar way. June is the start of summer and it can be more like summer the entire month. December is the start of winter and can be more like winter the entire month. A cold and snowy December makes for a long winter. A hot and sunny June makes for a long summer. Many of you would rather have December more like fall and June more like summer. After a hot start to this year’s June, some changes are on the way.I'll be updating the forecast throughout the week on Twitter at @growingwisdom Please follow me there. Wet and muggy today, much cooler Tuesday

Posted by David Epstein June 3, 2013 10:01 AM

Yesterday’s severe weather that occurred over northern and western New England is not history. Marine air just around ground level helped to knock the stuffing out of the storms as they moved to the coast. This not only preventing any big storms, it basically caused the storms to fall apart in their entirety before reaching the coast. Often I would personally be upset we missed the rain, but it’s not going to matter. Let me explain.
