Tropical pattern rolls on relentlessly
While we have had some nice weather days since early May, we haven’t had many of them. This weekend ended up being relatively rain free, but still not completely. Showers and storms crossed the area at different times Saturday and Sunday with most of us staying dry nearly all of the time. I think from now until Tuesday evening everyone will see at least a quarter to an inch or more of rain. Those areas that get hit with thunderstorms could see up to 3" of rain.

Flood watch has been issued
The bulk of the area has seen warm and humid conditions today with only scattered storms. We still have a risk for thunderstorms through sunset, but even more rain is likely later Thursday and Friday. A flash flood watch has now been issued for the possibility of flooding from heavy rain both tomorrow and Friday. This watch is in effect for nearly all of southern New England.

No drought with this pattern
What a beautiful morning. It’s warm and the sunshine is abundant. Over the next week to 10 days I think it will be important to take advantage of the morning as the chance for rain will increase in the afternoon.

FULL ENTRYHeat and humidity for the week
Heat and humidity are on tap for the next few days. Yesterday many areas hit 90F. Since most places will hit 90F, or higher, the next 2 or 3 days this latest round of sultry weather will mark heat wave number two for the season. There hasn't been an official heat wave for Logan Airport yet, but as you know from reading my blog, I don't really think that matters since no one lives there. If you live right along the water, you probably won't have a heat wave either.

FULL ENTRYSummertime weather through the weekend
Summer officially arrived just after 1 AM Friday along the east coast and this means that the sun has now reached its highest point in the sky for the year. The kids may still be in school, but the days lose a few seconds of daylight from now until just before Christmas.

FULL ENTRYHeavy rains slipping south, improving conditions on the way
Quite the day of rain and storms again. Some areas saw road closures and flooded basements. The line of showers and thunderstorms that caused all those issues is pushing south towards Cape Cod. The rest of the evening will see improvement from north to south. The shower area is also weakening as it moves past Plymouth. The radar loop below shows where the line of rain was as of about 5:30 PM.

FULL ENTRYSunshine fading for Dad's day
Happy Father’s Day! Our weather today will be going downhill, but in a slow, not dramatic fashion. A frontal system is going to pass through the area late today and with it comes the chance for showers. Dry conditions overall will continue through the morning with the chance of showers increasing after 4 PM. It’s going to be a warm day and even with fading sunshine.
FULL ENTRYMore soaking rain on our doorstep
More rain is on the way. There are flood watches up from Virginia to Maine this morning for all the heavy rain on the way. Areas in green along the east on the map below have the potential for flooding of some sort. I am expecting a general 1 to 2 inch rainstorm beginning later this afternoon and continuing overnight. When you combine this additional rainfall with the heavy rain from Friday we start to run the risk of more urban and street flooding. Also, rivers and streams are running rather high so there can be some flooding of the smaller rivers and streams.

FULL ENTRYClearing with some sunshine today
Our storm is now pulling away to the north and east of the area and the rain is all but done. One of the reasons I didn’t want you to cancel outdoor plans from mid-morning onward is that we have a reasonably nice day for Saturday and even a better one for tomorrow. There are still flood watches and warnings up for some small streams and rivers, but I expect those to come down during the morning and early afternoon. The term "flood" is used even if the water goes 1/2 inch above flood stage and doesn't mean there will be any real problems.I'll be updating the forecast throughout the weekend on Twitter at @growingwisdom Please follow me there. FULL ENTRY
Torrential rain for several hours overnight
Torrential rain will continue for several hours overnight. This has prompted flood warnings to be issued for nearly the entire southern New England area. These warnings are mostly for small stream and not big river flooding. Please be sure to check your sump pumps and if you are prone to flooding you may want to elevate any important material off the basement floor. This is going to be a system that causes urban flooding problems more than anything else.
At times the rain will come down at impressive rates and make travel difficult. I'll be updating the weekend forecast during the weekend on Twitter at @growingwisdom Please follow me there. Feel free to comment or ask questions too.
