Drought
Cooler air coming, but still sunny
I was having a rare cup of coffee this morning with a friend (I am more a tea guy) and discussing what to blog about this afternoon. He quipped, that there wasn’t much to say about nice weather which is certainly mostly true. However, all this dry weather is going to quickly become an issue as the foliage is rapidly emerging on the trees and water is being used by all the plants at a terrific rate.

FULL ENTRYPicture perfect weather this week
Every once in a while the weather becomes so perfect it’s almost hard to believe this is New England. The next week is going to be one of those periods where you might quip, “Why can’t it always be like this?" Cool mornings and mild afternoons with plenty of sunshine are going to repeat itself over and over into Friday. There won’t be much difference in how high or low temperatures get each day.

Nearly perfect April weekend on the way
The weather forecast for the next 5 to 7 days looks so wonderful it makes me nervous. You might think what would make you nervous about sunshine and dry weather? There are two things. First, this time of year a full week of no rain isn't good for agriculture. We are going to finish April with a rain deficit and this will be the second month, since the start of the year, without adequate moisture. While the landscape is greening, it won’t take long for drought to rear its ugly head. I probably get overly concerned about the rain, but as a gardener that’s where my head goes.

FULL ENTRYVery mild for the upcoming weekend
A cold front crossed the area last night and ushered in slightly colder air for today and Friday. Winds which gusted over 50 miles per hour in spots this morning, will remain quite busy this afternoon. Although temperatures will be in the lower 40s, it will feel a bit chilly with the wind. A clear night ahead will allow temperatures to fall again to the teens and 20s. Friday sunshine starts the day, but clouds and a few showers move into the region at night. These showers mark the leading edge of mild air that will be here for several days and even possibly break a record Sunday. The record this weekend are in the lower 60s and while I am not forecasting us to break the record Saturday or Sunday, if we got enough sunshine Sunday, we could get well into the 50s, a wonderful treat for the patriots. FULL ENTRYSunshine returns, first possible freeze coming
After a very gloomy period, sunshine is back for one bright day. This afternoon, brisk westerly winds will continue to filter chilly air into the region. The sunshine will help keep temperatures fairly mild, but the mercury will fall quickly after dark. Tonight will be clear and cool, but not frosty. Tomorrow another front will push offshore and allow even colder air to filer into the region. This cold air will make Saturday the chilliest day of the fall so far and the night before will bring a killing frost to many towns. As we head into the second part of the weekend temperatures will turn mild again and I expect much of next week to see temperatures back into the 60s with no frosty mornings. FULL ENTRYCool wet Friday, still unsettled this weekend.
Much needed rain is falling across the area this morning and will continue into the early afternoon and evening before tapering off overnight. A second area of rain will move along the coastline late tonight and clip eastern areas with another round of showers. Saturday will not be a washout although there will be some showers early in the day. Thereafter the trend will be for cloudy but dry weather in the afternoon. A new area of rain will move through late Sunday evening and into Monday before some sunshine returns for the rest of next week. Temperatures will be coolest today as they remain in the 50s and lower 60s. A return to 70F degree afternoons is likely for much of next week. FULL ENTRYFall and early winter predictions- October to December 2012
As we close out the month of September our weather year thus far will be remembered for its unusual warmth, dry spring and mid-summer conditions and lack of snowfall. You may already be wondering, what will the rest of the year bring for weather? Long range predictions have gotten much better over the past decade and will continue improve in the coming years. That said, meteorologists are still not perfect at predicting the state of the overall climate months into the future. What I can say with confidence is that we will have a snowier and colder winter than last year and that the likelihood of another major October snowstorm is slim. In today's blog I will discuss what goes into making a long range forecast as well as what some of the predictions are forecasting for the upcoming months. For more insight on the weather find me on Twitter at @growingwisdom
FULL ENTRYWind advisories, tornado watches and more make for rough night ahead
Severe weather affecting much of the East Coast this afternoon and will continue overnight. Currently, the heavy rain across the mid-Atlantic region where 1-4" of rain will fall is moving towards the north. This evening, that area will likely see some flooding issues. Locally, winds will continue to increase this afternoon and become gusty from the south overnight. This strong wind will transport very warm and humid air into the region. Temperatures remain around 70F much of the night. You might need to put on the air conditioning again if you don't like sleeping in muggy weather. A tornado watch has just been issued for Berkshire county here in southern New England, and thunderstorms are a distinct possibility in other areas.I'll be updating information about this storm and others in the future on Twitter at @growingwisdom

Fall foliage 2012-What will the leaves be like this year?
A crisp clear September morning and a bright blue sky will certainly evoke memories of a similar meteorological day eleven years ago. The weather will continue to be flawless much of the week with a warming trend. Today, I will blog about the foliage and the beauty of the colors that are soon to show up all across New England and much of the country. Many folks have already booked their trips to the Berkshires or northern New England and may be wondering if the colors will vibrant or muted this season.
The good news, the leaves always change and there will be some wonderful pictures to be had from late September through much of October across the area. There are many factors that help created a spectacular year versus a muted year of color. This year, if the weather cooperates, we are looking at a good chance of a better than average year of color. Flooding from Isaac across Gulf, spectacular weather continues in New England
This morning incredible amounts of rain continued to fall across much of the Gulf Coast. Isaac is moving at a very slow speed. The storm is moving so slowly you could actually stay dry by keeping pace and walking in the rain free eye. Rainfall amounts will easily exceed a foot in many places with 20" or perhaps more not out of the question. The amount of freshwater is going to be a problem for many low lying areas. You have to remember much of the area that homes and businesses are built is just marsh land. That type of topography easily floods. Although the levee system is upgraded, there are some levees that are not new and already a few have overflowed. For more information or to ask garden and weather questions follow me on Twitter at @growingwisdom
