Near record heat today, hot all weekend

Posted by David Epstein May 31, 2013 07:10 AM

After a warm and muggy night a pair of very hot days is on the way. Today, temperatures are going to approach record levels. The record for the next three days is 96F and even in Boston we will come close. I don't think we will exceed the record, but a high temperature of 95F is definitely in the cards. air quality.png Air quality isn't so good today and an alert for high levels of ground ozone (a pollutant) is up for the areas in grey.

Warmer air, a period of showers and a dry weekend

Posted by David Epstein May 15, 2013 07:00 AM

I think I have written about the last cold morning for the past few weeks. The fact that some places have seen frost as late as mid-May is a reminder to me to not count out the morning chill so fast.

Much needed rain and a nice day for mom

Posted by David Epstein May 9, 2013 01:14 PM

Much need rain showers continue to rotate through the area this afternoon. At times the rain totally stops only to be followed by a few downpours a few moments later. There has even been some sunshine across parts of the region. The unsettled day is thanks to a storm system spinning in the atmosphere to our south. The satellite image below shows the storm spinning around New York city. This storm has enough energy and moisture with it to be pushing rain showers into the area. Eventually, later this evening the system will move east and north and the chance of showers will end.

Finally some rain on the way

Posted by David Epstein May 7, 2013 06:00 PM

You knew it was going to come to an end at some point. Our fine stretch of nearly perfect weather is about to undergo a big change for the rest of the week and into the weekend. A block in the atmosphere has prevented any rain from reaching the area for several weeks. January and February had very close to normal precipitation, but since that time we have had only about half the amount of rain needed this time of year.

Cooler air coming, but still sunny

Posted by David Epstein May 2, 2013 01:31 PM

I was having a rare cup of coffee this morning with a friend (I am more a tea guy) and discussing what to blog about this afternoon. He quipped, that there wasn’t much to say about nice weather which is certainly mostly true. However, all this dry weather is going to quickly become an issue as the foliage is rapidly emerging on the trees and water is being used by all the plants at a terrific rate.

Picture perfect weather this week

Posted by David Epstein April 28, 2013 10:00 AM

Every once in a while the weather becomes so perfect it’s almost hard to believe this is New England. The next week is going to be one of those periods where you might quip, “Why can’t it always be like this?" Cool mornings and mild afternoons with plenty of sunshine are going to repeat itself over and over into Friday. There won’t be much difference in how high or low temperatures get each day.

Nearly perfect April weekend on the way

Posted by David Epstein April 25, 2013 06:08 AM

The weather forecast for the next 5 to 7 days looks so wonderful it makes me nervous. You might think what would make you nervous about sunshine and dry weather? There are two things. First, this time of year a full week of no rain isn't good for agriculture. We are going to finish April with a rain deficit and this will be the second month, since the start of the year, without adequate moisture. While the landscape is greening, it won’t take long for drought to rear its ugly head. I probably get overly concerned about the rain, but as a gardener that’s where my head goes.

Very mild for the upcoming weekend

Posted by David Epstein January 10, 2013 08:48 AM

A cold front crossed the area last night and ushered in slightly colder air for today and Friday. Winds which gusted over 50 miles per hour in spots this morning, will remain quite busy this afternoon. Although temperatures will be in the lower 40s, it will feel a bit chilly with the wind. A clear night ahead will allow temperatures to fall again to the teens and 20s. Friday sunshine starts the day, but clouds and a few showers move into the region at night. These showers mark the leading edge of mild air that will be here for several days and even possibly break a record Sunday. The record this weekend are in the lower 60s and while I am not forecasting us to break the record Saturday or Sunday, if we got enough sunshine Sunday, we could get well into the 50s, a wonderful treat for the patriots. Sunshine returns, first possible freeze coming

Posted by David Epstein October 11, 2012 11:20 AM

After a very gloomy period, sunshine is back for one bright day. This afternoon, brisk westerly winds will continue to filter chilly air into the region. The sunshine will help keep temperatures fairly mild, but the mercury will fall quickly after dark. Tonight will be clear and cool, but not frosty. Tomorrow another front will push offshore and allow even colder air to filer into the region. This cold air will make Saturday the chilliest day of the fall so far and the night before will bring a killing frost to many towns. As we head into the second part of the weekend temperatures will turn mild again and I expect much of next week to see temperatures back into the 60s with no frosty mornings. Cool wet Friday, still unsettled this weekend.

Posted by David Epstein September 28, 2012 08:15 AM

Much needed rain is falling across the area this morning and will continue into the early afternoon and evening before tapering off overnight. A second area of rain will move along the coastline late tonight and clip eastern areas with another round of showers. Saturday will not be a washout although there will be some showers early in the day. Thereafter the trend will be for cloudy but dry weather in the afternoon. A new area of rain will move through late Sunday evening and into Monday before some sunshine returns for the rest of next week. Temperatures will be coolest today as they remain in the 50s and lower 60s. A return to 70F degree afternoons is likely for much of next week.
