Heat Waves

Nearly perfect afternoon, a few showers later tomorrow

Posted by David Epstein August 14, 2012 11:19 AM

Another fine morning will lead us into a super afternoon. It will be quite hot with temperatures in the 80s everywhere. You will find temperatures on the lower end of the range at the water and the upper end inland. Humidity will be moderate but not excessive, that is coming tomorrow. A front will move eastward during Wednesday. The first signs of this front will be some clouds showing up on the horizon later this evening. Shower will develop Wednesday, but much of the morning and early afternoon should end up rain free. We are not looking at widespread rainfall. The front will be slow to leave Thursday and therefore I am not expecting rapid clearing. The best weather Thursday will be over the western parts of New England with the most clouds east. Great weather for several days

Posted by David Epstein August 6, 2012 08:15 AM

The air the past several days has been incredibly humid with gobs of moisture suspended in the air. You only had to be outside for a few minutes before your shirt needed to be changed. Although this morning is quite humid, that is going to change hour by hour and by the middle of the afternoon a refreshingly dry air mass will have replaced the sultry one.
I am expecting low humidity, but warm temperatures for the next several days. Humidity will arrive back here later Wednesday and continue into the first part of the weekend. Hopefully we can sweep the muggies back out to sea for the second part of the weekend and the annual Perseid meteor shower.

Flash flooding far west, hot & humid east

Posted by David Epstein August 4, 2012 03:55 PM

This afternoon we find a lot of different weather across the region. Big storms are firing up in far Western Massachusetts prompting a flash flood warning in western Franklin county (small red area on map). Heat and humidity are combing to the southwest of Boston, prompting a heat advisory. (orange area) box.png The immediate coast is enjoying a sea breeze which is keeping temperatures in the upper 70s. While there could be a thunderstorm this evening, most of the region will remain dry and warm overnight. Sunday will be another very warm and humid day with more storms over night.

Improving forecast, but not perfect

Posted by David Epstein July 29, 2012 07:15 AM

The weather once again today will feature clouds, some sun, temperatures in the 70s and that ever present chance for showers we have been dealing with for several days. The most important aspect of the weather to keep in mind over the next week is that although you will read or hear about showers in the forecast nearly every day, many of you could go one, two or three days without seeing any rain. Temperatures will remain in the upper 70s and lower 80s at the start of the week but begin to get warmer rising into the middle and upper 80s for the second part of the week and into the weekend. I make frequent updates about the weather and other gardening tips on Twitter at @growingwisdom

Nice weather today, downhill thereafter

Posted by David Epstein July 25, 2012 09:25 AM

After another afternoon and evening of thunderstorms, the rest of the overnight turned out very nice with cooler temperatures and clearing skies. Hail did some damage to parts of the area, especially around Plymouth where it covered the ground. The day dawned bright and except for a gusty wind this afternoon will be a wonderful July day. Unfortunately, we will not be able to string together any more really dry days for a while. You are going to hear showers and thunderstorms mentioned in the forecast through Saturday or even Sunday. It's important to note that hearing or seeing the word rain in the forecast doesn't mean a washout. However, if it does rain during the Thursday through Sunday time period, that rain could be torrential. If you a quick weather question why not ask me through Twitter at @growingwisdom

Storms continue through early evening.

Posted by David Epstein July 24, 2012 04:12 PM

As of now storms are going to be moving on a line south through the area through about 5PM or 6PM. Some storms may reach severe levels with hail and gusty winds. radarnow.jpg The radar shows the line moving southward as of mid-afternoon. This line has had a few storms with hail, flooding rain and winds that have taken down a few trees. Keep an eye to the sky and look for my Twitter updates @growingwisdom the rest of the day. I am happy to answer any weather or gardening questions you have. This morning's blog is below. Our severe potential has prompted a severe thunderstorm watch until 8PM although I expect the Severe Storms Center to pull that down before that time as the threat looks to me to be over before then. I am watching another line behind this one that if it holds together will produce more storms, but I think the most severe will have gone by.

To say the weather is going to be changing over the next few days feels like saying the sun will set this evening. (FYI 8:12) However, change is the theme once again through the weekend Each of the next 5 days will be a bit different than the previous one. We had an uncomfortable night for sleeping last night and tonight will be quite comfortable. Today is humid, tomorrow is dry. Some rain moved through the area early this morning and we have a chance for more storms later today. There is virtually not any chance for rain Wednesday. More of these flips and flops of temperature, humidity, sky cover and the chance for rain are going to occur right through the weekend.

New weather pattern through weekend

Posted by David Epstein July 18, 2012 08:09 AM

After a wild afternoon Wednesday the weather will be much quieter the next few days. The front that cleared out the heat and humidity is now south of New England, but still close enough to keep some clouds over some of the area through Friday. The best weather will be north of the Massachusetts Turnpike and the least sunshine across Cape Cod and the Islands. Temperatures will still be warm although humidity levels are not nearly as high as the past few days. An area of rain will cross to our south tomorrow and I will be watching carefully the northward progression of the rain. I don't expect more than a few clouds at this time. Heavy downpours and street flooding in places

Posted by David Epstein July 17, 2012 06:00 PM

Severe weather moved across the area this afternoon and some continues this evening. There is very heavy rain along the Mass Pike and this will continue through the early evening. Some areas will see 3 inches of rain and street flooding. I don't expect much more severe weather, but very strong storms are likely in areas mostly from Boston south and west. If you are not using twitter yet, give it a try. I update the forecast regularly, give garden tips and will answer short questions. You can find me on Twitter at @growingwisdom

We have seen a lot of severe weather this afternoon from Boston north and for the rest of the day the focus will be south of Boston towards Rhode Island and the Cape. The heat the past week has been caused by a large high pressure area that is finally going to relax its grip on the northeast and Midwest. Whenever you have a change in air masses there is the risk for showers or thunderstorms and that risk will be with us for much of the afternoon and evening today. Fine weather returns later Thursday and by Friday morning it will be refreshing Canadian air for a few days. If you are not using twitter yet, give it a try. I update the forecast regularly, give garden tips and will answer short questions. You can find me on Twitter at @growingwisdom

Very hot today, changes begins tomorrow

Posted by David Epstein July 17, 2012 01:05 PM

For New England, the core of the latest heat wave arrives today. We along with most of the country, are all going above 90F this afternoon. There is a heat advisory in effect for much of southern New England. heat2.png A heat advisory is issued when the heat index, a combination of the heat and humidity exceed 100F. Other parts of the east coast back through the Midwest will bake today with the heat index also over 100F. Chicago's actual temperature will close in on the century mark this afternoon. In contrast, Dallas will only be in the mid-90s. Indeed, Texas, which last summer saw a record number of days above 100F is not having as hot a summer this year. Dallas had already seen 16 days at or above 100F by this day last year. As of today, they have only had one. For Texans, this is a "cool" summer. I guess it's all about perspective isn't it? Humidity and heat, but some storms Sunday

Posted by David Epstein July 14, 2012 02:46 PM

Mid-July is the heart of summer and that means heat and humidity across much of the country, including the northeast. This weekend will not be perfect as we had clouds the first part of Saturday and the risk for showers and storms on Sunday. That said, most of the time will be dry and temperatures will be warm to hot. Look for humidity to become very uncomfortable later Sunday and Monday continuing through Wednesday night or Thursday. The air quality is also quite poor this weekend with areas shaded in grey below under an air quality alert.
