RECORD: The U.S.-based Committee to Protect Journalists said 232 journalists are jailed around the world as of Dec. 1, a record number since the group began counting in 1990.
WORST: Turkey currently holds the most journalists — 49 — with dozens of Kurdish reporters and editors jailed on terror-related charges and anti-government plots. Iran is second, with 45 journalists behind bars. China is third, and 19 of the 32 journalists held there are from the Muslim Uighur minority and ethnic Tibetan groups.
BETTER: The Committee also highlighted improvement in Myanmar, which over the last year has pardoned a dozen journalists.![]()
