1958: Guinea gains independence from France.

1984: Lansana Conte takes power in a military coup.

1993: Conte forms a political party and wins the country's first multi-party presidential election.

1996: Soldiers bombard presidential palace for several days while Conte is holed up inside.

1998: Conte is reelected in a vote the opposition rejects.

2003: Conte is reelected in a vote boycotted by opposition.

2007: The two strongest unions call a general strike until Conte agrees to leave office. Conte declares martial law, names a prime minister, Lansana Kouyate.

May 2008: Conte fires Kouyate and says he will be replaced by Ahmed Tidiane Souare. Junior troops take the army's second-in-command hostage.

Monday: Conte dies.

Yesterday: A group calling itself the National Council for Democracy says the government has been dissolved.
