MOGADISHU, Somalia—Thousands of Somalis have gathered in a soccer stadium in the country's capital to denounce the recent truck bombing that killed more than 100 people.

The blast was claimed by the al-Qaida-linked militants of al-Shabab who vowed to increase attacks "day by day" against the government and African Union peacekeepers.

President Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed urged the crowd gathered Sunday to help government forces in eliminating the militants whom he called "religious thugs." The rally, also attended by other officials, was held under tight security.

A truck loaded with drums of fuel exploded Tuesday at the gate of a compound housing several government ministries on a busy street in Mogadishu.

It was the deadliest single bombing by al-Shabab since its insurgency began.
