HARARE, Zimbabwe—A Zimbabwe court has freed on bail three businessmen arrested Wednesday on charges of spying for the United States, Canada and Afghanistan.
Magistrate Munamato Mutevedzi on Tuesday ordered two telecommunications company directors to pay $2,000. The third suspect was ordered to pay $700. They are to reappear in court on Nov. 15.
Prosecutors allege the three set up unlicensed satellite communications equipment bought from a Canadian company and used it to send state secrets to Canada, the U.S. and Afghanistan. Prosecutors say the three countries are Zimbabwe's "enemies".
The three businessman have denied any wrongdoing.
Defense lawyer, Lewis Uriri, said the state's case was weak and they had no evidence to prove the three had committed the crime.
Espionage carries a possible 25-year imprisonment.
