MOGADISHU, Somalia—A Somali official says one civilian was killed when soldiers fired on a crowd when a food distribution become unruly.

Ahjmadey Mire, a police official, says people were pushing others and grabbing sacks of food during a distribution Friday in a community in northern Mogadishu.

Mire said that soldiers began beating people in line and firing into the air, but that the melee continued and soldiers kept firing, killing one person and wounding five others.

Amino Mohamed, a resident, said the refugees fled the scene when the gunfire broke out but returned later for food.

The U.N. declared parts of Somalia famine zones in July. Tens of thousands of people fleeing hunger have set up camps in Mogadishu.
