LAGOS, Nigeria—Police say two officers are dead after gunmen blew up a police station in central Nigeria and attacked a bank branch there.

Kogi state police spokesman Ajayi Okasanmi said Sunday that the attack happened Friday night in Kabba. Okasanmi said the gunmen used explosives to blow up the station and the entrance of a First Bank PLC branch.

Okasanmi said police believe armed robbers carried out the attack, though it mirrors similar robberies across north Nigeria attributed to the radical Muslim sect known as Boko Haram.

The group has been carrying out a campaign of attacks for more than a year, including one Nov. 4 that killed more than 100 people in northeast Nigeria. Boko Haram wants the strict implementation of Islamic Shariah law across the country.
