American deaths
The Pentagon has released the names of the following US service members killed recently in Iraq and Afghanistan. According to an Associated Press count, at least 3,610 members of the US military have died since the Iraq war began in March 2003. At least 26,695 have been wounded, the military says. In Afghanistan, at least 407 US personnel have died and 1,380 have been wounded.
In Iraq
Two soldiers were killed on July 5 in Baghdad: Major James M. Ahearn, 43, of Concord, Calif.; Sergeant Keith A. Kline, 24, of Oak Harbor, Ohio. Both were assigned to the Army 96th Civil Affairs Battalion, 95th Civil Affairs Brigade, Fort Bragg, N.C.

Three sailors were killed on July 6 in Baghdad: Petty Officer First Class Jason Dale Lewis, 30, of Brookfield, Conn.; Petty Officer First Class Robert Richard McRill, 42, of Lake Placid, Fla.; Petty Officer First Class Steven Phillip Daugherty, 28, of Barstow, Calif. All were assigned to an East Coast-based SEAL team.
