2007 marks the first time that Chinese companies are found at the top of the world's most-valuable companies list, gaining four of the top eight spots and eight among the top 20.

The Chinese company with the highest market capitalization is Petrochina. China Mobile, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, and China Petroleum are the other top-ranking Chinese companies.

In 1999, it was US companies that occupied six of the top eight ranks of the companies with the highest market capitalization. Microsoft was first, at $604 billion.

Japanese companies that dominated the list in 1989, with a total of six companies in the top eight, led by Nippon Telegraph & Telephone.
