LUCKNOW, India—Police say a packed bus collided with a truck in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, killing at least 17 people and wounding 35 others.

State police spokesman Surendra Srivastava said seven of those wounded in Sunday's accident were hospitalized in a critical condition.

It was not immediately clear what caused the truck to veer into the path of the bus, causing the accident near Etah, a town some 185 miles southwest of Lucknow, the state capital.

Deadly road accidents -- common occurrences in India -- are often caused by rash driving, old and overloaded vehicles and bad roads.
