KATMANDU, Nepal—The U.S. Embassy in Katamandu says Peace Corps volunteers will return to Nepal seven years after they left during the peak of a Maoist rebel insurgency.

Wednesday's embassy statement says the first group of about 20 volunteers is scheduled to arrive in Nepal later this year.

They will be trained in agriculture and nutrition and will work with rural communities to improve food security and the health of the Nepalese people.

The insurgency ended in 2006 after the Maoist rebels agreed to enter a peace process with the government. The fighting lasted for 10 years and killed more than 13,000 people.
