DHAKA, Bangladesh—A leading business chamber in Bangladesh has called for alternative protests to strikes as an opposition-sponsored general strike continues to disrupt daily life.

Schools and most businesses remained closed in the capital, Dhaka, and other major cities and towns across the South Asian nation for a second straight day Monday. The opposition is enforcing the strike to protest the disappearance of one of their leaders. Last week, it enforced a three-day strike.

The Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry says the strike is hurting the poor country's economy and has urged opposition parties to shun it.

The chamber says it's affecting Bangladesh's overseas trade because transportation is being seriously disrupted and consignments are stuck at ports.
