Staff Sergeant Craig Cherry, 39, of Maine
Cherry lived in Winchester, Va., but spent much of his childhood in Maine, and his father, Roy, still lives in Windham. Cherry, a friend, and their interpreter were killed when a bomb hit their Humvee Aug. 7, 2004. He had arrived in Afghanistan two weeks earlier. Cherry left two teenage children, an 8-month-old baby, and his wife, Donna, whom he married in January. When not serving in the Virginia National Guard, he worked for the US Patent and Trademark Office.
