New England's War Dead: Afghanistan

Sergeant Major Phillip R. Albert, 41, Terryville, Conn.

Albert was killed Nov. 23, 2003, when his helicopter crashed during combat operations in Afghanistan. Fellow soldiers remembered him as an "infantryman's infantryman" and a solid commander. He had spent 22 years in the military and was considering retirement when the events of Sept. 11, 2001, persuaded him to stay. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
