New England's War Dead: Afghanistan
Private First Class Evan W. O'Neill, 19, Haverhill
O'Neill, was a firefighter's son who was proud of his father's military service and couldn't wait to join. He was killed Sept. 29, 2003, in an ambush in Shkin, Afghanistan. The night before he died, he'd called his mom and told her how cold and dark it was in Afghanistan. After her son died, Barbara O'Neill organized volunteers to make quilts for disabled veterans, and the city of Haverhill named a new veterans hall in honor of him.
