New England's War Dead: Afghanistan
Master Sergeant Evander L. Andrews, 36, Solon, Maine
Andrews was killed Oct. 10, 2001, in a forklift accident while helping construct an airstrip in Qatar. He grew up on a family farm and joined the Air Force after high school, coming to like working with heavy equipment. His was the first fatality in the war on terrorism. At his funeral at Arlington National Cemetery, mourners faced the still-charred Pentagon. "Yep, he is a hero," said his son Ethan, 9, during the ceremony.
