US Treasury secretary urges Germany to do more on economy

BERLIN — Jacob J. Lew, the US Treasury secretary, urged Germany and its European partners Wednesday to take even bolder steps in terms of banking reform, as his German counterpart, Wolfgang Schäuble, defended the complicated and still incomplete blueprint agreed to by European finance ministers in December.

Lew’s American avuncular finger-wagging — a time-honored tradition of touring US Treasury secretaries — came as European Union lawmakers themselves were at odds with Berlin over the plans approved last month for overseeing and financing a system meant to deal with troubled banks in the eurozone.
