ROME—Rupert Murdoch's Sky Italia has bought the broadcast rights within Italy for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and London's 2012 Games.

In a deal reached Monday with the International Olympic Committee, Sky Italia acquired rights across all broadcasting platforms, including free-to-air, Internet and mobile phone, the company and the IOC said in a joint statement.

Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

Sky Italia, the country's leading digital satellite television network, will have to resell the free-to-air rights as it does not broadcast on that platform.

Tom Mockridge, Sky Italia's CEO, said discussions to identify a partner among Italy's free-to-air networks will begin immediately. Likely candidates are state television RAI, which has rights for the Beijing Olympics, and Mediaset, Italy's largest private broadcaster, owned by former premier Silvio Berlusconi.
