ATHENS, Greece—Bank of Greece governor Nicholas Garganas said Friday he has decided to step down when his term expires next month.
"After 33 years of service at the Bank of Greece the time has come for me to withdraw from the leadership of the Bank," said Garganas, a European Central Bank governing council member.
Garganas has headed the bank since 2002, and his six-year term expires June 14. No successor has been formally appointed yet.
Greece joined the shared euro currency in 2001, which means the head of the Bank of Greece also sits on European Central Bank's governing council that sets monetary policy for all 15 euro countries.![]()
