ANKARA, Turkey—Turkey's government has decided to sign the Kyoto Protocol on cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
Government spokesman Cemil Cicek says the Cabinet will send a bill to parliament for approval.
Monday's decision comes three days after Environment Minister Veysel Eroglu said Turkey was ready to join the Kyoto Protocol.
Turkey had previously rejected signing the U.N. protocol, saying it needed to complete its industrial development first. But the country is under EU pressure to improve environmental standards.
The Kyoto Protocol binds 37 developed nations to cut greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 5 percent below 1990 levels by 2012.
