MILAN, Italy—Italian natural gas and oil company Eni SpA said Tuesday it would start selling gas to a Russian company that owns power plants in the Perm region near the Ural mountains.

Eni will sell 350 million cubic meters of gas to TGK-9 by 2010 under terms of a contract signed on June 1, the Italian company said.

Eni said the deal represents a fundamental step to expanding its presence in the Russian market -- the second-largest consumer of gas in the world. Eni has intensified its role in Russia through agreements with Gazprom, including a 2007 deal to build the South Stream gas pipeline that will link Russia to the European Union across the Black Sea.
