UNITED NATIONS—Russia is countering a French push for immediate withdrawal of Russian troops from Georgia by circulating a competing U.N. Security Council resolution.
The Russian draft put forth Wednesday restates the terms of a cease-fire signed by both sides.
A French draft resolution presented earlier demands full and immediate compliance with the cease-fire and the immediate withdrawal of Russian forces to positions prior to the start of the fighting.
Georgia, the U.S. and European allies criticize Russia for remaining in Georgia and performing military operations despite the cease-fire.![]()
