Iran hails military ties with Russia

MOSCOW—Iran's defense minister says he hopes to obtain new military technologies from Russia.

Mostafa Mohammed Najjar said at a news conference Friday that Iran has relied on Russian help to modernize its military and hopes to continue receiving new weapons from Russia.

Moscow has developed close ties with Tehran and is building its first nuclear power plant.

Russia also has supplied weapons to Iran, despite U.S. and Israeli complaints. However, Russian officials have rejected claims that they have provided Iran with powerful S-300 air defense missiles.

Russia's daily Kommersant said this week that Moscow had frozen the sale of S-300s, pending the first meeting between U.S. President Barack Obama and Russia's Dmitry Medvedev.
