WARSAW, Poland—An official says Poland is considering a number of nuclear engineering giants as a partner in building the nation's first nuclear power plant by 2020.

The government minister in charge of the program, Hanna Trojanowska, said Thursday that Poland is considering bids from Westinghouse and General Electric, Areva and companies from Japan and South Korea. A decision is expected in two years.

Poland relies on coal for 90 percent of its energy and the government is speeding up efforts to switch to nuclear energy.

The most likely location for the plant is near the Baltic Sea town of Zarnowiec but other locations are also being considered.
