GENEVA—Mexico's Foreign Minister has dampened hopes for a breakthrough deal at the Cancun climate change talks in November.
Patricia Espinosa says the success of the talks doesn't depend on countries reaching agreement for a new legally binding text on reducing carbon emissions.
Espinosa says most of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol to reduce greenhouse gases will remain in force beyond 2012.
The United States rejected the Kyoto Protocol and scientists say a new, stricter deal is urgently needed.
Swiss Environment Minister Moritz Leuenberger says countries are "no longer fixated" on agreeing a successor to the Kyoto protocol in Cancun.
He and Espinosa spoke to reporters in Geneva Friday after a meeting on financing climate change projects in developing countries.
