BUCHAREST, Romania—Officials say Romania's inflation rate fell more than expected in September as a bumper harvest lowered food prices.

The National Statistics Institute said Tuesday that year-on-year inflation slowed to 3.45 percent for September, down from 4.25 percent in August.

Last week, National Bank Governor Mugur Isarescu predicted that inflation would slow in September, after it reached 8 percent in March.

Romania is expected to return to growth this year after two years of recession.
