LONDON—The Royal Shakespeare Company says long-serving artistic director Michael Boyd is stepping down next year.
The company said Friday that Boyd and executive director Vikki Heywood will both leave by the end of 2012.
Boyd has been in charge since 2002, overseeing a period of strong box office and high-profile productions.
He led the company through the 100 million pound ($160 million) renovation of its theater complex in Stratford-upon-Avon, 100 miles (160 kilometers) northwest of London.
Boyd spearheaded preparations for next year's World Shakespeare Festival and took the troupe and five productions to New York this summer.
Boyd said "10 years will not be enough to achieve all that I would like," but the time had come to hand over to a new artistic director.
